For 2 nights our Amalfi Tour was based in Agerola. For some this may seem like an unusual choice of accommodation by a tour company. One of those cheaper nights out of the way. However it made perfect sense when you get a full appreciation of the landscapes your dealing with around the Amalfi Coast. Agerola is a tiny bit inland when you look at a map of the Amalfi district. So yes you're not really on the coast. But the coast here goes pretty much vertical to this area.
In the past when tourism might have just been about being at the beach, or at the coast we were told the communities like Agerola missed out on tourism. But now with the popularity of the Amalfi Coast has meant there is a growing demand, and presumably a very successful series of developments or programs have been made to ensure this community doesn't entirely miss out on the tourism market.
Agerola was our setting as the town provided the perfect launching pad for two days of walking. The first was a hike around from Agerola towards the Amalfi side of the coast around San Lazzaro. This area provided us our first view out towards Amalfi itself along side passing by one of the more revered local wine producers and stopping at multiple viewing lookouts. The walk definitely was no walk in the park. It was in the days after really learn this was merely the warm up, a virtual rest day. Might have only done say 20kms for the days end. But it felt like more than a decent stair climb with a pasta lunch stop.
From Agerola you get a much more pure experience of the region than down in the mass tourism market towns of the coastline. Here local restaurants were smiling, and happy to have foreign guests. He we were appreciated. We went for a walk both evenings from our locally owned guest hotel down into the town centre to find some absolutely brilliant restaurants. In fact one La Corte Degli Dei I can't rave about enough. This was like a Romeo and Juliet scene. Regional Italian picture postcard perfect. You get the picture. This was my food highlight of my whole trip. And well you all know how I love my food.
In December 2023 I had the opportunity to add to my exploration of the Philippines. A week away tacked onto a work trip. Within this week I planned out a one side destination trip. Just one island, one day trip. So that I wasn't overwhelmed. And well acknowledging there may be other opportunities for more trips later. Yes the prior trip had physically broken me. I'm no longer 25. I chose Coron Island over El Nido. Not because I knew it'd be better. I had seen enough videos comparing the 2 destinations to figure out you'd be okay whichever you choose. Both are a part of the Palawan region. I chose Coron Island because I could fly out of there easier on the time frames I had. A week away meant I needed to be more direct, in, out, no dilly-dally. There was no time for rain delays, nor contingencies if I had to ferry elsewhere. Accommodation I had read up about had indicated that you need to be in the Town Centre if you want to walk about. And it often was overpriced and u...
In visiting London I stayed with my friend Darren. Heck Daz and I have a tradition of meeting up every time I make it to Europe. This time it was somewhat a home game for Daz. Not staying elsewhere. But it doesn't mean we didn't go elsewhere. We went to Brighton. He had friends there, and had never been to Brighton. So a short train journey for lunch and visit to Brighton Beach was put into motion. As Australians we all know that technically they don't have beaches in Britain. Either by "white sand" rule, or "it's not warm enough to be considered going to a beach" rule. Look those rules up if you want. Yes maybe I made them up. But it does explain why UK has so many residents in Bondi Beach. But I have proof. See these photos. This is their beach. Pebbles. And I'm not talking fine pebbles. And this is what they put on their beaches. Giant size Piers with traditional fairgrounds. Nice for tourists actually. Very nostalgic. Hence the pho...
Hamelin Bay was the stop of the day for Tour Day 5 of the Intrepid South West WA tour. However this doesn't mean it was due to a lack of highlights. The stingrays are amazing. So graceful, so relaxed. Even with the hundreds of tourist at their beach in what would be the busiest week of the year. The giant Karri trees we stopped in at with the Gloucester Tree are great. But they're no stingray. This evening on paper gave me bragging rights. New Years Eve 2021 I was in the Margaret River wine region. Sounds amazing like that. Alas reality was we were at a bush camp in the middle of nowhere away from the coast and majority of the tourist. But they do say don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.
